I have written and published 207 books with foreign translations into 16 languages.

Chess correspondent of The Times of London from 1985 to 2019.

My most recent books are Fifty Shades of Ray, Chess in the Year of the King and Touchstone of Genius, my comments on Napoleon, Goethe and their relationship to Chess. The first two books anthologise my weekly columns for The Article and seek to place the game of chess within its historical , scientific , literary and cultural context.
